The museum building is made up of 5 main areas making up nearly 4000m2 of exhibition space. Ranging from the early settlement of Dunedin through to how the community sees their city today. With a large digital presence throughout the museu the amazing objects, imagery and stories have been revitalised for new and existing visitors.
Toitu opened it’s doors to the public in December of 2012 after being closed for 3 years to undergo a full redevelopment.

New case systems, display methods, graphics, lighting and overall design aesthetics have made Toitu a contemporary museum not only in New Zealand but on a world stage. Toitu Otago Settlers Museum won the Museums Aotearoa ‘Project Achievement Award’ for a significant project in 2013.
